Strasbourg's City Council has approved a motion to study the feasibility of launching a local cryptocurrency, marking the first such initiative by a major French metropolis. The proposal, championed by Pirate Party councilor Caroline Zorn, seeks to evaluate economic, social, and technological implications without pre-selecting a technical solution.

The project aims to leverage digital assets for local economic stimulation and citizen engagement, mirroring Cannes' recent crypto adoption by merchants. Concerns persist among some officials regarding environmental impact and operational complexity.
